Re-read the instructions
Ensure you read the application before you start to fill it out. Doing this makes it less likely that you will place information in the wrong fields because you’d now have an overview of what the employer is asking on the form. There may be fields that require a yes/no response or some that require a paragraph. To increase your chances of being shortlisted you need to answer these questions accurately. The ability to follow instructions is a fundamental skill, so don’t let this be an indictment on your part.
Review the job description/vacancy carefully
Are you applying for an executive role with 1 year of experience out of university? The Applicant Tracking Software (ATS) will weed you out. An ATS is an automated system that is used to store and organise information about job seekers. The information is searchable and assists with shortlisting and rejecting those applications which do not have the right keywords such as certain qualifications or those applications which are incomplete. Don’t waste your time or the employer’s. Kindly review the vacancy and see if you’re a good fit for the position.
Complete all the fields in the application
Yes, the employer is aware that some of the answers to the fields in the candidate portal are also on your resume bu that doesn’t mean you should leave the fields blank. Typing, “Please refer to resume,” makes you appear lazy. These fields allow the Applicant Tracking Software (ATS) to sort through thousands of applicants so it’s in your best interest to complete every field.
Identify key words and tailor your resume
Always go through the job posting and highlight the key competencies and skills that the employer is seeking. Keep your resume handy and match the highlights to your achievements and responsibilities. You should reorder your bullet points so that these appear first and catch the employer's eye.
Double check everything before hitting “submit”
Always proofread your application carefully several times before you submit. Check for spelling and grammatical errors. Attention to detail is another skill that employers look for and this is a simple way to demonstrate it. Remember, once you click ‘submit’ your application is sent to the hiring manager or recruiter. You can’t repeal you application if you notice an error. Make your first impression the best impression; double check everything.
