Tips for your Year End Performance Review

So your performance review is coming up? Or maybe it’s scheduled for this week? If you aren’t quite ready, we’ve got you covered. There are things you can do now to ensure you make the most of your year end conversations. Remember having a plan is the best way to approach all aspects of your career!

Take Time to Reflect

Don't go into your performance review blind. Carve out some time before your meeting with your leader to reflect on your year. What went well? What could’ve been improved? Did you develop any new skills? These are the questions you need to answer to ensure you're fully prepared. Take it quarter by quarter...reflect on Q1-Q4. You may be amazed at how good of a year you've had or maybe you'd realise there's room for improvement. Loosely quoting John C. Maxwell, "Reflection turns experience into insight."

Have your list of accomplishments ready

This is not the time to be modest. Prepare a laundry list of your successes. Think of this as if you're receiving an award. Tell the audience why you deserve this outstanding rating. Don’t just speak about what you did but also mention how you did it. Who did you collaborate with? Did you use new technology to accomplish some goals? Were you respectful to your colleagues and/or stakeholders in execution of your goals? Ensure you are as thorough as possible. Don’t rely on your leader to remember.

Pro Tip: Don’t trust yourself to remember either. Keep notes throughout the year on the projects you’ve completed and kudos you've received.

Speak about your day to day activities too

Your leader may not be aware of all the smaller tasks and activities that you do which contribute to the success of your department. For that reason you need to make them aware of your value! Mention those things which are often forgotten or neglected but have a big impact if they are not completed.

Enquire about Career Next Steps

If you’ve had a stellar year it’s only right that you enquire about what’s next for you. Is it a promotion? A pay increase? Or are you looking for more responsibility or a bigger project. This is the time to speak about it. Don’t just assume your manager or leader knows where you want to be. Spell it out! You have to take a active interest in your career because no one else is going to do that for you.

Taking time to prepare will help ensure your appraisal is impactful and beneficial to both you and your leader. It's a must to keep track of your goals during the year but if you didn't...follow our tips to get yourself ready for that year end conversation.
